7 Low Maintenance Pets for Apartments

An important factor you must consider before bringing a pet into your home is how suitable your home is for the pet. Pets ideally prefer to stay in a spacious house with lots of comfy room and, of course, a yard to play in. If you don’t have this kind of living facility or if you live in an apartment then you’re quite limited to properly care for a pet.

Luckily for you, there are quite a number of low maintenance pets that will be suitable for your living situation. So if you want to belong to this category of pet owners, you can choose any of the pets listed in this article.

If you want pets that are cuddly and easy to care for then check out his amazing list of low maintenance pets that like to cuddle.

Here are 7 low maintenance pets for apartments:

  1. Fish

You’ll probably not find a more suitable pet for an apartment than a creature that is constrained to a bowl of water.  A fish is an incredible pet to have if you live in an apartment.

Not all fishes can be kept as pets, though, so don’t go get a salmon for your fishbowl otherwise you will have to eat it for dinner. There are small and beautiful species of fish that make amazing pets. Examples are the goldfish, barb, betta, and of course, the rainbow fish.

A pet fish isn’t just an amazing companion, it also helps to improve the interior decor of a home by illuminating it. You can maximize this feature of a variety of colorful species by acquiring more than one and putting them in a well-decorated fish tank.

Most fishes live for several years in enclosed habitats so you won’t have to be changing pets frequently. You should endeavor to care for them, though, as they can be easily affected by neglect.

Fish food can be procured from a pet store nearby and is quite affordable. You must feed your pet fish thrice a day for at least a minute per session.

  1. Hamster

If you live in an apartment but still want a pet you will be able to cuddle, then a hamster is definitely one of the best small pets for cuddling. You will probably not find another mammal that is more suitable for an apartment than a hamster; unless, of course, you intend on getting a human pet.

Hamsters are pretty much easy to care for and are renowned for being comfortable in cages. This is one of the main features that differentiate the little beast from its close relative, the guinea pig, which is a less restrictive animal.

Unlike the guinea pig, which mostly thrives in a group, a hamster doesn’t mind being lonely as long as its cage has toys and exercise tools. You should also endeavor to clean the animal’s cage frequently and, of course, feed it.

  1. Gecko

If you’re into reptiles, then your options for pets that can be kept in an apartment are quite limited. One of the best reptile pets you can own, though, is the gecko. This beautiful creature isn’t really social but, at least, it isn’t dangerous either. It may take a while before the animal gets used to you; but when it eventually does, it will be able to play safely in your hands.

Two species are most ideal if you intend on getting this pet for your apartment. They are the crested gecko and the leopard gecko.

Geckos only eat about three times a week so you won’t have to stress yourself feeding the animal. They, of course, feed mostly on insects so unless your home somehow has a steady supply of this, you will have to purchase them at a nearby pet food shop.

  1. Hermit Crab

One fancy option you can go for if you want a low maintenance pet for your apartment is a hermit crab. This crustacean is 100% comfortable living in an enclosed cage as long as you don’t bother. It is a quite private animal.

It is the best pet you can get if you want an animal that won’t demand any attention. Just feed it and leave it alone to go about its business. A hermit crab can live up to 20 years or even more. It is also quite social so getting 2 or 3 isn’t a bad idea.

If you’re on a budget, then this pet is perfect as it doesn’t eat much. This ensures that your expenditure on pet food won’t be excessive.

  1. Cat

If you want a more conventional pet that is easy to care for and ideal for an apartment, then a cat is your best bet. With cats being clean animals that can be easily trained to perform basic sanitation, it is safe to say that they are more adaptable to living in an apartment.

Feeding is quite important when it comes to caring for a cat, and unless your home is riddled with delicious mice, you must not neglect your duty of feeding the animal.

  1. Mouse

If you don’t want Tom living in your apartment, you can always get Jerry. On a serious note, a mouse can be a cool pet to keep in an apartment as long as you aren’t doing so against your will. A nice cage is important if you want to keep a mouse as a pet. The creature is capable of breeding aggressively, so it’s best you keep things under control.

Feeding shouldn’t be an issue as most mice will consume a variety of food items. It is important for you to take good care of your pet, though, so that it doesn’t go rogue like the much popular cartoon character.

  1. Tarantula

This is another ideal pet for an apartment as long as you don’t have a phobia for spiders. You only need to get a glass cage for this creature and you should be good to go. You should be wary as those you live with may have an irrational fear for the creature; hence, only acquire the popular arachnid if you live alone or have gotten permission from your fellow co-inhabitants.

Tarantulas feed on live insects so you will have to capture its food alive or better still, visit a nearby pet store to purchase it.
